  • Teaching to Trespass: A Place for Story in the Online Classroom

Thursday, September 3, 2020 | 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Facilitator: Linda Stewart Teachers employ stories every day in their face-to-face classrooms, but how might they translate into online instruction? Do your stories purposefully engage students, amplify instruction, or create inclusivity? Building upon Gloria Anzaldua’s, Michel de Certeau’s and Tara Yosso’s concepts of border crossing, trespass, and counter stories, this webinar examines storytelling as an inclusive and transdisciplinary pedagogical tool. This webinar draws from narrative theory, learning sciences, and personal experiences to explore the many functions of storytelling for instructors and students who bring their own stories to the online classroom. With disciplinary and course goals in mind, participants will explore purposeful narrative strategies to enliven lectures, enhance discussions, and build community in the online environment.  –  September 03, 2020

  • Motivating Students in an Online Course

Thursday, August 27, 2020 | 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Facilitator: Mandy McGrew The scholarship on motivation tells us that value, self-efficacy, and a supportive environment all contribute to a student’s motivation. These “three pillars of motivation” are further supported and enhanced when students have trust in their professor and develop a rapport with them. But how do these motivation theories transfer to the online course modality? In this webinar, we will briefly examine these motivation theories and discuss ways to motivate your online students to achieve success in your course. Attendees will receive information and resources on motivation theory as well as some practical tools to use in remote and online instruction to boost your presence in the class and engage your students virtually.  –  August 27, 2020
