Teaching to Trespass: A Place for Story in the Online Classroom

Thursday, September 3, 2020 | 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Event Type: Webinar
Facilitator: Linda Stewart

Teachers employ stories every day in their face-to-face classrooms, but how might they translate into online instruction? Do your stories purposefully engage students, amplify instruction, or create inclusivity? Building upon Gloria Anzaldua’s, Michel de Certeau’s and Tara Yosso’s concepts of border crossing, trespass, and counter stories, this webinar examines storytelling as an inclusive and transdisciplinary pedagogical tool. This webinar draws from narrative theory, learning sciences, and personal experiences to explore the many functions of storytelling for instructors and students who bring their own stories to the online classroom. With disciplinary and course goals in mind, participants will explore purposeful narrative strategies to enliven lectures, enhance discussions, and build community in the online environment.
