This webinar will draw upon the positive deviants literature from positive psychology to engage participants in guided reflection with an eye toward surviving and thriving in the context of situational constraints that are amplified in the COVID context. We will take time together to pause, reflect, and set intentions for our well-being and productivity in the year to come. We will celebrate our accomplishments together. Teachers employ stories every day in their face-to-face classrooms, but how might they translate into online instruction? Do your stories purposefully engage students, amplify instruction, or create inclusivity? Building upon Gloria Anzaldua’s, Michel de Certeau’s and Tara Yosso’s concepts of border crossing, trespass, and counter stories, this webinar examines storytelling as an inclusive and transdisciplinary pedagogical tool. This webinar draws from narrative theory, learning sciences, and personal experiences to explore the many functions of storytelling for instructors and students who bring their own stories to the online classroom. These “three pillars of motivation” are further supported and enhanced when students have trust in their professor and develop a rapport with them.
