Emotions impact how we relate to other people, can influence decisions we make, and may draw people toward us or push them away. Emotional Intelligence (EQ) refers to our ability to recognize emotions in ourselves, and others, and how emotions impact our behavior. According to Alward and Phelps,"a leader's emotional intelligence awareness and prowess may be pivotal to improving effectiveness, particularly in virtual teams" (2019). This workshop will explore the skills emotionally intelligent individuals can utilize to be an effective leader. – October 21, 2020

The happiest and most successful academics are those who blend professional tasks. This workshop will invite participants to seek ways to merge research interests with traditional academic responsibilities in order to alleviate burnout and envision ways to capture more fully work that they are already doing or would like to be doing. By viewing interests and expertise through the lens of institutional mission statements and initiatives, teacher-scholars find opportunities for engaging in personally satisfying work that also aligns with institutional goals. – October 14, 2020

I have papers to grade! Yes, responding to student writing often takes more time than any other teaching responsibility. We want to respond to student writing in meaningful yet efficient ways, but the time and energy we put into this work can be daunting. In this webinar, we will debunk some myths about responding to student writing. We will review assignment design, rubrics, checklists, and commenting protocols. Further, we will identify strategies that work for a range of online writing assignments. – October 13, 2020

We know from the literature on faculty success that faculty are more likely to thrive in terms of teaching, productivity, wellbeing, and success in promotion and tenure when they are supported by their colleagues. This support can come in many forms, from one-on-one friendships and mentoring to affinity and accountability groups. It is also essential within the context of faculty meetings, committee work, and group negotiation. This webinar will foreground the goal of equity as participants consider the literature on supporting colleagues in all of their faculty roles. They will then identify steps for personal and team/departmental development in this regard. – October 06, 2020

In this interactive webinar, participants will learn how to integrate effective communication and solution-seeking strategies of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) in both face-to-face and online class environments. AI processes emphasize mindfulness of rhetoric and question-framing to promote positive, constructive dialogues that de-emphasize ‘problems’ in favor of seeking ‘solutions.’ Participants learn to integrate AI principles in their classrooms by practicing and developing their own AI approaches for the context of their classrooms. Also known as Appreciative Circles, group discussions framed by AI principles are suitable for discussing classroom content as well as addressing classroom expectations and behavior. Through the inclusion of AI principles, participants can both role-model and engage students in how to establish and maintain constructive dialogues and collaborative online classrooms. – September 29, 2020

When we assign students a project or activity, we often take for granted that they will understand what we are asking them to do and why. Students do not always have the skills and ability to determine this, though, particularly in the relative autonomy of the online course environment. Writing assignments with a clear purpose, that explains the task in full, and provides the criteria on which students will be evaluated is so important. This informational webinar will provide a brief primer on what TILT means and how you can make a small change in your online course that could have a big impact on student learning! – September 18, 2020

This workshop will explore how your online (and other) course can contribute to KSU's It’s About Engagement! initiative, which fosters learning through participation in high impact experiences in undergraduate research, internships/co-ops, and service learning. It’s About Engagement! is integral to KSU's mission and vision to "offer high-quality and productive undergraduate ... and co-curricular programs" that "empower the members and graduates of the university community to have the vision, ability, and courage to transform the future." We will explore how It’s About Engagement! relates to our own contexts by investigating these questions: (1) How can my online course help KSU meet the goals and objectives for student participation in the KSU's It’s About Engagement! initiative? (2) What are the core characteristics of an online It’s About Engagement! course? – September 10, 2020
