When we assign students a project or activity, we often take for granted that they will understand what we are asking them to do and why. Students do not always have the skills and ability to determine this, though, particularly in the relative autonomy of the online course environment. Writing assignments with a clear purpose, that explains the task in full, and provides the criteria on which students will be evaluated is so important.
