This workshop focuses on developing a teaching philosophy statement or revising a current one. Using several writing prompts, we will generate ideas about the broad principles currently guiding our beliefs about teaching and learning. We will identify critical incidents in our teaching and learning and share those stories to get feedback from our colleagues. We will also identify theorists that align with our values and purpose. We will also articulate concrete ways our philosophy is enacted in our current or future classrooms. A memorable teaching philosophy statement is crucial for job searches, annual reviews, award applications, and more (Lang, J. M. 2010). Participants will be asked to complete a teaching inventory prior to the workshop. – September 09, 2021

Research supports the argument that students who feel acknowledged and respected in their learning environment are better able to focus their attention on the course content and perform on assessments. Creating an explicitly centralizing climate in our classes requires the intentional and deliberate application of inclusive strategies and practices designed specifically for this purpose. In this session, we will review the research on inclusive pedagogies, introduce a variety of activities and strategies designed to promote inclusion of all students, and share our experiences in building our own inclusive classroom communities. – September 08, 2021

How can I systematically design quality learning experiences for my students? The use of a template to guide the design learning activities, whether they are 5 minutes long or 75 minutes long, can enhance the overall quality of student learning. Components of Pacific Crest's activity design methodology include, among others, the "why" statement helping motivate students to give their best effort, plans for constructive intervention during the activity itself, and brining appropriate closure to the exercise to solidify learning gains students have made. Join us to discuss how to get the most out of an easy to use activity design template based on this model. – September 02, 2021

Now that you have developed your critical reflection assignment for your IAE course, it is time to consider ways in which you may evaluate the assignment and provide students with feedback. This workshop will present ways to make the evaluation of this assignment more objective. During this workshop you will identify the key learning outcomes that this reflection assignment targets, the purpose for the evaluation of the assignment in your course, and the evaluation metric that best suits the prior two considerations.
