Now that the spring semester is well under way and many of us have drafted or submitted our annual review documents and faculty performance agreements, lets take time to pause and reflect on the lessons we learned from the recent past in order to plan for thriving in the spring. The session will provide a brief overview of the literature on the importance of reflective practice for faculty flourishing. Participants will then be lead through guided reflection about our work, our community, and our well-being. The session will conclude with time devoted to guided strategic planning for the spring. – January 24, 2022

Teaching students who began their college career during the pandemic brings unique challenges and opportunities. For example, students who didn't take the SATs might be difficult to place. Further, students in this group may not have a strong sense of purpose/meaning and feel this is all futile and unimportant when compared to recent unemployment in the family, deaths of family or friends, etc. Nonetheless, several successful strategies are available to help this cohort of students, encourage a growth mindset, and provide a sense of purpose/belonging. The workshop will introduce several strategies and provide space to share with each other as we consider how these strategies might make a difference in our own courses. – January 21, 2022

The throat chakra sits at the junction of the head and the body, and as such, it reminds us that healthy communication comes from the alignment of our thoughts and emotions. Finding an authoritative voice to speak our truth while remaining open to other people’s truths is especially relevant in situations of conflict (Patterson et al. 2011). In this workshop, we will unpack the mechanics of the throat chakra and generate strategies for healthy communication, telling our own story, conflict management, negotiation, and more. – January 21, 2022

Preparing the necessary documents is only the first step of the Annual Review Process. Once our case is laid out on paper, we need to present it to the chair. Since so much relies on those conversations, we want to make sure we are well prepared for them. This workshop will present strategies to effectively advocate for ourselves, negotiate toward specific goals, and respond with empathy and clarity in case of differing perspectives in order to nurture a long-term relationship with our chair. – January 20, 2022
