Teaching First-Year Students Who Started in the Pandemic

Friday, January 21st, 2022 | 3:30 - 5:15 p.m

Event Type: Webinar
Facilitator: Tris Utschig

Teaching students who began their college career during the pandemic brings unique challenges and opportunities. For example, students who didn't take the SATs might be difficult to place. Further, students in this group may not have a strong sense of purpose/meaning and feel this is all futile and unimportant when compared to recent unemployment in the family, deaths of family or friends, etc. Nonetheless, several successful strategies are available to help this cohort of students, encourage a growth mindset, and provide a sense of purpose/belonging. The workshop will introduce several strategies and provide space to share with each other as we consider how these strategies might make a difference in our own courses.
