Summer Planning in Early Career for Full Time Faculty: The Importance of Summers in
the Marathon of Working toward Promotion & Tenure
Friday, May 14th, 2021 | 4:00 – 4:30 p.m.
Summer is here! What a relief. It is time to take a break, refresh, and live the “great
life” of a professor. After all, we get summers off, right? Hmmm…If the joys of summer
are not that simple for you, you are not alone! How should we approach summer? Is
this the time to rest and recharge? Is it the time to catch up on all of the research
and writing left undone this year, or to get a head start on the new year? What if
you are teaching one, two, even three summer courses?
This is a lot to figure out, and many of us are more exhausted than ever. Let’s be
intentional about summer in Early Career. Working toward Promotion and Tenure is a
marathon, not a sprint, and we need to plan accordingly. Join your full-time early
career colleagues to plan strategically for summer, including setting goals to help
you along your long-term path of success. That includes planning time for significant
self-care!
