Service Learning Course (re)Design Institute

Service learning is a High-Impact Practice for students. The It's About Engagement! Institutes for Course (re)Design are an opportunity for faculty to transform their courses to enhance student engagement using research-based practices that are aligned with the definitions and guidelines for the Its About Engagement! initiative. For the 2020 Course (re)Design Institute, CETL is partnering with KSU's Department of Leadership and Service, Jenny Hirsch from Georgia Tech, and Urkovia Andrews from Georgia Southern to focus on service learning. Faculty can either design a new course or redesign an existing course.

These institutes are open to faculty who teach in all delivery modalities (online, blended, or traditional face-to-face). The institutes are intentionally designed to be an inclusive and interdisciplinary environment. During the institute, participants are exposed to the theory and research of instructional strategies or pedagogies, followed by the time and space to put that theory into practice via changes to course plans and assignments.

Throughout the institute, participants are provided time to work on their course alone, get feedback from colleagues, and the opportunity for assistance and feedback from a workshop facilitator. Each day, participants set goals and share their outcomes as part of an accountability circle. On the final day, participants share their newly (re)designed artifacts. These artifacts may include a syllabus, a fully articulated course mapping document to show constructive alignment among course elements, a set of objectives, learned-centered activities, assessments, and/or rubrics.

Faculty accepted to this Institute will be paid a stipend of $1,500 upon completion of the requirements.

  • We would like to strengthen the community of practice among institute participants as teacher scholars who can expertly facilitate and assess service-learning experiences. 
    Institute participants will be able to: 

    • Apply the backward design process to their service-learning course(s) 
    • Translate high level service-learning goals to actionable outcome statements 
    • Produce assessments that evaluate student learning from service-learning activities and provide feedback for instructional practices 
    • Create equitable service-learning activities that directly support intended learning outcomes and motivate students to develop skills over time 
    • Align service-learning outcomes, assessments, and activities to support significant learning goals
  • The next offering of this Institute will be May 18-22, 2020. The Institute will be 8:00am - 5:00pm each day with the last day (Friday), as a half-day.

  • Each accepted faculty member will receive $1,500 for their participation in this Institute as long as the requirements are met.
  • All full-time faculty, part-time faculty, and lecturers who are under contract to teach during the semester the course will be delivered are eligible to apply.
  • Follow the online application submission instructions below. Only completed online applications that include the fully signed cover sheet submitted by the application deadline will be accepted. 

  • In order to receive the stipend, faculty who are accepted into this Institute must do the following: 

    1. Participate in the Institute (4.5 days) in its entirety.
    2. Produce a revised syllabus with a service learning experience for a course to be taught in Summer 2020, Fall 2020, or Spring 2021. The service learning experience should meet the "It's About Engagement" guidelines for service learning courses.
    3. Produce guidelines for a reflection assignment in the course.

    (Note: Time will be allotted in the Institute for participants to work on their syllabus and assignments)

  • The deadline for submitting an application is Monday, April 6, 2020 - 11:59pm.
  • All applicants will be notified of the decision within approximately two weeks after the application deadline.
  • Approximately 15-20 faculty members can be funded in this Institute.
  • Yes; any for-credit course can be used for this course redesign institute. The courses can be introductory, intermediate, Directed Studies, capstones, etc.
  • Yes! We encourage all faculty who are interested in course-based service learning experiences to apply for this Institute. This includes faculty who have never done this before as well as faculty who are already doing this but would like more information about improving the experience for their students.

It will be the responsibility of the individual submitting the application to ensure all portions are complete.

  1. Download the Institute for Course (re)Design cover page and obtain all required signatures. (Please use DocuSign to obtain electronic signatures on university documents.)
  2. Fill out the required fields in the form below.
  3. Upload the required PDF file of the completed the cover page.
  4. Click “Submit” when you are ready to submit your application.

You will receive an email confirmation of receipt within 24 hours. If you do not receive the confirmation email, contact CETL in case there was an “electronic glitch.” It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the proposal was received by the deadline.
